SUN RA'S MUSICBOX, BY WALTER MICHELSON

Walter Michelson, an author, composer, musician and visual artist born in Bregenz (Austria) in 1953, has included a Sun Ra inspired musicbox among his already large collection, each of them devoted to a musician. At the left you can see two pictures of this special work of art. Here is the author's commentary about his work, as received by email:

"it is not so usual for artists to explain their work BUT I am a musician, too. sometimes I have the feeling I eat music and I must find a way to give it back in a way of art and painting, especially the colours that I feel about certain musicians. then I combine it with objects, but not reasonable, it is more a feeling, eating music ... the objechts are the meal and the fork, the knife, the spoon ...

they are my very personal feelings expressed in installemnts, the boxes are not finished yet, the will grow new boxes will follow, the ones that seem to be finished will become part of a meta-musicbox of the composer (in the case I might like to do it ...)"

The Sun Ra's musicbox has recently been exhibited at Kofomi in Salzburg. See www.kofomi.com. You may find info about another of his musicboxes, dedicated to Captain Beefheart, here.

Liner notes: Ra rehearsals have always been known to be legendary. Rehearsals were marathon sessions that would result in some of Ra's most original works. In fact, some of the early Saturn releases were actually from rehearsals. Sun Ra always had a tape recorder going to capture his music at every opportunity. Yet, there is little material that has surfaced over the years from these rehearsals when one considers the sum of all the music that must have been recorded.

It came as quite a surprise then when this rehearsal session was discovered on a tape box that was actually labeled as "Mexico City 1/26/74". Here is living proof that what was labeled as one thing actually contained something completely different.

Unfortunately, there is no music from the also legendary trip to Mexico in 1974. But, in its place is 96 minutes of a rehearsal, believed to take place in the San Francisco area in December 1974. You will hear cuts and edits as the recorder would be started and stopped as Sun Ra led the band through this session. We felt it was important to leave the recording as found, with only some minor remastering work to enhance the sound where possible.

An Arkestra member once summed it up best when he said "The best music always came from the rehearsals." Here is solid evidence to back up that statement!

THE LOST REEL COLLECTION, A PROMISING SERIES OF CD's WITH UNHEARD MATERIAL

Transparency, the California-based label, is preparing a series of cds with very interesting material by Sun Ra never published before. Never heard, we could say, as these tapes have never been in the trading circles etiher. The first volume, an already released 2-cd set, contains on the first disk a performance in San Francisco, June 10th. 1971, with a very intense declamation by Sun Ra punctuated by the horns of the Arkestra. Disc two is one of the famous clases given by Ra during his teaching residence at UC Berkeley on May 1971. We have heard about these classes before, and now we can attend one!

The second volume, to be published in few weeks, seems to contain a performance in Berkeley, summer 1971 and another one from 1972, unknown location.

Transparency label can be contacted at the email address Transparency2007@yahoo.com

I was about seven years old when on august 6, 1945 Hiroshima was the first city in the history of mankind to be struck by an atomic bomb - dropped by the United States Air Force. In our days the only so-called democratic government which applied this mass-destruction weapon for the first time and would not hesitate to use it again, asks other countries to stop the development of nuclear power. What a miserable Christian hypocrisy. Why Sun Ra titled his only acoustic document performed on a church organ “Hiroshima”?. Despite of my young age in 1945 I can very clearly remember the gloomy atmosphere in ‘bombed-out’ Stuttgart with my family sitting around my Uncle’s place in Schwaebisch Gmnd during the twilight hour and talking about this unbelievable criminal act against Hiroshima. Beside the depressed mood of the talk I only remember the {surely false} fact, that “Little Boy”, as the United States offendingly called their bomb, was only as small as a tennis-ball...

“That is a big organ”...June Tyson, “just heard that last week”. She said she put it on - she was startled... and the longer you listen to that the more sounds... the organ had so many sounds. Layers of sounds... it was recorded...well Danny Thompson does have a video tape. Some kind of digital cassette recorder. That’s something new and then it was taken off of that, I think it was put on directly from cassette... he didn’t have no original, he had a copy of the digital cassette, but the feeling is there... I played a lot longer. But, you know, but being organ I cut it kind of short to put it out because of the fact of the grooves, the vibrations might make it jump... well, it’s on tape, you see, but when you put it on disc you got to watch those grooves ‘cause it will jump over’ organs are very hard to record. So he had to make that about five or six times ‘cause he wasn’t satisfied... and that organ was making such incredible sounds, you know.... {From a conversation with Sun Ra and Peter Hinds, February 14, 1986: Sun Ra research, issue 21, February 1999, page 13/14.}. Beside the well-known political call and response ritual “Nuclear War” there is with regard to the contents the related “Hiroshima”, a pipe organ solo by Sun Ra, recorded in a theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. By attentive listening one can discover some other instruments too. One can hear a triangle, a bird whistle, a slap-stick or castanets, a tambourine ring, cymbals and most likely different drums.

The record was released in 1985 on one of Sun Ra’s “Saturn” long playing records with the number 11-83. The flip side of this record is titled “Stars That Shine Darkly...” Recorded live at Montreux, Switzerland during the tour of The Sun Ra All Stars, early November 1983.

The Art Yard Records Sun Ra El Saturn reissue series is sanctioned by Marshall Allen Director of The Sun Ra Alter Destiny 21st century Omniverse Arkestra.

Front Cover Photograph © Tate Images, Painting by John Martin 1851-3. ‘The Great Day Of His Wrath’.

Sun Ra was a ground breaking musician and bandleader of immense vision whose extraordinary work and time on this planet has yet to be fully appreciated. We hope this reissue series brings Sun Ra’s music to the wider audience it deserves.
