Cribs slips of paper, secret messages, stiff, cassibers, pamphlets, invectives - papers with written printed painted things on it, but multiplied in a different way, through other channels. Remember Basho ? "Old pond. A frog jumps in. Plop !" - In a language now dead for centuries there is a word that does not only mean or signify this Plop! It describes the whole situation, it evokes the scene: swumfsl! Can you pronounce this ? The Goths, marching from the East and North through Italy to Spain, used this word for 'pond' - If Literature is the ocean, then the edition swumfsl is a pond, pre- even para-literary. You can throw in everything, you will not get anything out of it - and in spite of this it gives a damn on literature etc. In Slavic, not Slavish, language, samisdat means published by the author him/herself, at one's own expense. This is the very beginning of the so called age of Gutenberg. All old books were conceived this way, Klopstock 1774, Poe 1845 - In the 1970's the government of Tasmania banned the publication of its list of banned publications. Brian Miller, minister of justice, declared he found the 2000 titles almost scandalous - But what about all those publications that don't manage to appear on such a list ? |
