Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179)
Hildegard von Bingen was born in the German Rhineland nine hundred years ago. "In the entire panorama of European music Hildegard can now be seen as the first star composer, an individual personality forging a distinctive body of individual works. No earlier composer has left a heritage of compositions matching hers for size or individual distinction (Cogan 1997)."
Holy spirit,
giving life to all life,
moving all creatures,
root of all things,
washing them clean,
wiping out their mistakes,
healing their wounds,
you are our true life,
luminous, wonderful,
awakening the heart
from its ancient sleep.

Hildegard von Bingen

900 year celebration of birth of Hildegard von Bingen

An extraordinary Congress for Hildegard von Bingen was held September 13 to 20 1999 in Bingen, Germany. I felt very privileged to be a part of this celebration. Many scholarly papers, good vibes, lots of receptions, and stimulating conversation. People came from all over the world, each honoring Hildegard in some unique manner.

I, myself, am fascinated by this woman, so capable of building large monasteries, managing considerable wealth, since hers was a monastery for wealthy women who brought their wealth with them. Hers was the Order of the Benedictines, their Rules concern Humility and Commun- ity. She was respected by the Pope, the clergy, as well as the Royalty of the time. She was an expert on nutrition, and found time to compose music for her nun's. Her paintings and writings are as fascinating today as they were in their own time.

She made me become aware of the Holy Spirit surrounding us, making contact with the divine spirit within. The New England Conservatory Chamber Singers, under the direction of Tamara Brooks, brought the moving music to us. Medieval, Hildegard, and a bit of Pozzi Escot's compositions were on the program.

The versatile and hard working Pozzi Escot, Chairman of the International Institute for Hildegard Studies, gave all of us inspiration to carry on in Hildegard's footsteps. A two-day festival continued at New England Conservatory, Boston, September 24 an 25, with more music and stimulating lectures.
