June 2001
Happy Birthday, Israel

Please do not send me
any information that
crashes my antique machine
and breaks my heart

That Nazi Sharon with his militaristic
designs to destroy Israel
Did enough damage in 1967

And his final terrorist act
Of destruction of ancient olive groves
Takes away the livehood of people
Who live by the land

And helps destroy what was once
The land of milk and honey
That other destroyers
Made into a desert

Ah, tell me not about such
Power hungry men
Our living God
Knew about them Long ago.

From our Torah, we are reminded:
Treat the stranger as one of your own
Remember we, too, were slaves in Egypt
On Yom Kippor; we, the destroyers of
the Covenant
Repeat very piously, the
Story of Hager

We, who try to keep the Covenant
Remember the Sabbath to keep it Holy
And remember His commandments
Watch in helpless despair as our
Rulers plunge us into chaos

Like the days of Ezekiel,
During the first Destruction of the Temple
We mourne, but Ezekiel asks that a mark
be put on the forehead of those who suffer
watching their exile from Israel

And so today, we who try to
remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
and try to remember the Commandments
And try to replenish the good earth
So that all may benefit

We cry out, in shame
Oh hear oh Israel
The Lord our God
The Lord our God
Is One

Remember my Commandments
Thou shalt love thy neighbor
As yourself
