DIARY ON THE ROAD
86TH BIRTHDAY - April 2005

Prayer

It is in the giving
That we shall receive

In forgiving
We will be forgiven

And in dying
We shall be reborn
To eternal life

St. Francis

We don't have to wait until death
Each day there is a reconciliation
Each day there is a rebirth
Each there we are reborn
To eternal life

Family Resurrection

The big family celebrations
Somehow bring this about
With six children
There were all the Bar/Bat Mitzvahs
Then the graduation parties from High School

Now there seems to be so many weddings
And brand new babies the rebirths
I can't keep up with the Great Grandchildren
There is so much going on with college

Michael Morse

Each with some springtime partner
Adam at St. Johns School, Sante Fe
I remember him so intense
Soccer, chess, delivering newspapers
Then it was golf, tournaments
I participated in them all

Now there is in the same family
Laurent, so beautiful, at Davidson College
Applying for jobs in Economics
Economics? Who is this brilliant lady
So beautiful, so serious
Yesterday we played tennis
And her coach gave me free lessons
He loved that in my eighties
I could still bat that ball back and forth
As I had done for some 60 years!

Sarah Morse

Then there is Maurie
Hey, Maurie what are you doing with guys?
Now at Grinnell she is grinning giggling
That's what I did in Spring
Some 70 years ago when I was sixteen
Toby, still in High School, plays his sax
A brilliant scholar, not ready for girls
Abby and Joey are still kids!!

Alan Wiseman

In the Wiseman family
Its one wedding after another
And more and more babies
First Steven, the wedding in Venice
Already Annabelle beautiful Annabelle
Who took me to foreign films
Now a mother, hey Annabelle
Dont you have time for grammy now?
In Los Angeles, she is involved
Baby crying, baby doing well
Baby this, baby that
Another great grand child, oh dear

Now David, that little shy kid
Alan calls it a Manhattan Wedding
What's going on in the Wiseman family?

The engagement party in Alan's home
Six bedrooms, one water fall, tennis courts
Swimmng pool, gorgeous paintings and sculptor
Is this my son Alan? The eagle scout?
Knights of Dumanus, with Ike Eisenhower
Ike loved Scouting, and Alan was in his Honor Guard

Now David already with his own home
His own computer business
Laurent who took me to Woody Allen film
At my favorite Bethesda Row Cinema
And the Engagement Party
Never in my life have I seen THIS

A tent, attached to the home
Decorated in beautiful draperies
Magnificant as a Chief's of a Bedoin tribe
Well heated against the chilly weather

Gale Morse

Among some of the tallest people I know
Jay, husband of Space Engineer Gale Morse
Towers above me, tells me his business
Has slyrocketed beyond their dreams
Hey, Jay, when do you have tme for guitar
Marathoning running, trips to Portugal?
This extraordinary activity in the Morse progeny

Sitting among the flock of children grandchildren
Sits Sarah. She from Grinnell. David Grinnell
David brilliant economist with high level job
In Energy Regulatory business
Took 15 years to get that PhD degree
And now his ideas respected in government

Michael and Mary

Another Government worker theres Michael
National Science Foundation
And wife Mary

My neighbor who lets me live alone
But protects me takes me shopping
Takes me to Davids services
Keeps the computer running
And with wife Mary keeps me alive

Each family has one such a member
At his fathers funeral he sobbed
My father took care of me
When I needed him most
I will take care of my mother always
Now he takes care of me
My birthday present to myself at 86

Alan

Golly I sit on the steps to talk to Julie
Another child of Alans clan
Two marriages in his family
Must be contagious two brothers married

Now I meet Entien a beau for many years
Hey Julie whats with this guy serious?
Her eyes light up
Another wedding thinks me
Another great grand child
No No I say to myself
Can't keep track of this progeny

Ilene

Mingling in the crowd in the tent
Is Ilene without Dan
A beacon in the church
The y recently visited the Pope
He is deacon in Catholic Church
And all wrapped up in death of Pope

Melvin

In Seattle the son the doctor
Recently on Sony lot, Calif

A grandfather five adopted children

But time for touring USA and Europe
I am a constant companion
I marvel with the adoring New Age fans
My son the doctor
I remember him in the crib
Always with a book and his hat

Malcolm

As a Political Activist I was never home
It was Malcolm who raised the children
No TV No Radio
Homework checked each night
Before bedtime children gather for books
Shakespeare, poetry, classics
Way above children's heads
But they learned words ideas sunk into heads
Later to be remembered in classrooms

Islamic Development

And Islamic Law
Islam and Civil Society in Indonesia
I feel I am watching a Feudal Society
Bible day civilization emerging
Into the Third Millenium
So much suffering, society torn in shred
How long must this go on in the Third Millenium

I stay at the Cosmos in total luxury
Never dreamed of in my early youth
It was the Depression and FDR was chief
There is "'Nothing to Fear but Fear"
He told a suffering nation
As labor pulled away from Robber Barons
Suffering and sacrificing for the people
Another battle for democracy
And striking against the power structure
Going on since ancient civilizations
Came and died in the Land of Israel

Divine Plan?

What is the Divine Plan?
And how long must it take?
To absorb ancient wisdom
Love thy neighbor
Love the alien in your country
Feed the poor the hungry
Clothe the hungry
So that all will prosper

Passover, Easter, Ramadan

Each year since ancient Temple days
We celebrate the Passover
Now at the end of this Conference
I am the Lord Thy God
I took you out of the Land of Egypt
The Chosen people freed from Egypt
Moses the little boy found in bullrushes
Climbing Mt Sion for Ten Commandments
Now Three Children of Abraham
Try to learn to live together
In the New Millenium

Always Robber Barons

Robber Barons now Global Corporations
Pollute the planet provide weapans
To kill and murder people in their way
Robber Barons still with us
Destroying forests murder people
Always people in their way
Villages families destroyed
Always people in their way

How many conferences?
How many black tie galas
How long must people unite
Before Robber Barons
Learn to Love their neighbors
The planet is so small now
We are all
neighbors

Caretakers

A warm thank you for all
The working people
Dedicated people
Who make the planet
Just a little better
Because they care
About our Lonely Planet
